MEDIA MONITORING OF THE PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN SERBIA

 14 December 2000

The Media and Democracy Programme of the European Institute for the Media
will conduct a media monitoring of the parliamentary elections in Serbia in
December 2000. This project is part of a larger programme on Media and
Democratic Institutions in Eastern and Central Europe which is carried out
by the EIM with support and funding of the European Commission.

The media monitoring project in Serbia, which is carried out in cooperation
with the Media Center and Institute for Strategic Media Research &
Marketing (SMMRI) in Belgrade, would include monitoring of political and
special election programmes in the broadcast media and election-related
material throughout the country.

The media monitoring will focus on the Serb media's compliance with the
national regulations as well as intenationally accepted standards of the
campaign coverage.

The quantitative analysis conducted by a team of local operators will be
complemented by a series of interviews with politicians, public figures and
media personalities conducted by an international expert, Mr Steve
Crawshaw, Independent, UK.

Director-General of the EIM, Professor Dr Jo Groebel (DE) will act as Head
of the Mission. Project coordinator will be Dr Elena Chernyavska (UA). The
findings of the mission will be made public at the press conference at the
Media Center, Makedonska 5/II, 11000 Belgrade, FRY, at 21:00 hrs on the 23d
of December, 2000.

The EIM epresses its sincere gratitude to the IREX ProMedia Serbia and its
resident adviser, Mr Rich McLear, for assistance in monitoring and sharing
the resources.
