1998 ACTIVITY REPORT
Trial Monitoring
· 14 and 15 January: Appeals trial of the extreme
left group OAKKE for insulting authorities, inciting citizens to commit acts of violence
upon each other and illegally posting bills. Testimony of a GHM member as witness for the
defense. Defendants acquitted.
· 19 February: Monitoring by Abdulhalim Dede of the
trial of Ms. Eva Androutsopoulos for «proselytism». The trial was postponed for 18 June
1998
· 18 June: Monitoring by Panayote Dimitras of the
trial of Mrs. Eva Androutsopoulos for «proselytism». She was found innocent.
· 15 September: Panayote Dimitras and Nafsika
Papanikolatos monitored the trial of four ethnic Macedonians, members of «Rainbow», who
were accused for «inciting citizens to commit acts of violence» because they hung a sign
on their offices, in Greek and in Macedonian stating «Rainbow – Florina Committee».
The party was prosecuted for using the Macedonian language on the sign, a clear violation
of the right of free expression. They were finally acquitted.
· 5 November: Monitoring by Mehmet Dukkanci and
Aysel Zeybek of the trial of Mehmet Emin Aga, the elected Mufti of Xanthi, who was accused
of usurping the title of the Mufti. The Court of Appeals was held in Thessaloniki. His
sentence was reduced from 12 to 8 months, which he bought off.
· 6 November: Mehmet Dukkanci and Aysel Zeybek
monitored the case of the dissolution of the Turkish Union of Xanthi, following the
request of the Nomarch of Xanthi. The Nomarch requested the dissolution because the Union
used the word «Turkish» on its title. The hearings took place at the Court of Appeals of
Komotini and the trial was postponed for the 4th December 1998
· 4 December: Aysel Zeybek monitored the hearings at
the Court of Appeals of Komotini where the Nomarch of Xanthi requested the dissolution of
the Turkish Union of Xanthi because it used the word «Turkish» on its title. The trial,
once again, was postponed for January 1999.
· 14-15 December: Aysel Zeybek monitored the trial
against Mehmet Emin Aga, the elected Mufti of Xanthi, who was accused for usurping the
tile of the Mufti. The trial took place in the Single Member Criminal Court of Larisa. He
was sentenced to 8 months, which he bought off.

Dimitras was elected as the representative of the European Defenders to the Enlarged
Steering Committee.
· 10-13 December (Amsterdam, Holland): A Gulliver
Network meeting to establish the charter for Essay International. Participation of Nafsika
Papanikolatos, a founding member of Essay International.
Fact - Finding Missions
· 18-23 March (Ohrid and Skopje, Macedonia): GHM
meetings with representatives of the Albanian and the Bulgarian minorities of Macedonia.
Also working meetings with Macedonian NGOs.
· 1-10 May (Roma Settlements in Greece): Joint
mission of GHM and the European Roma Rights Center (Budapest) in 26 Roma settlements in
various regions of Greece.
· 18-20 June (Thrace, Greece): GHM meetings with
representatives of the Turkish minority in Thrace.
· 19 July (Florina, Greece): Monitoring at the
Greek-Macedonian borders the visit for the 50th anniversary reunion of ethnic Macedonians
who fled Greece as a result of the 1946-49 civil war. Some were denied entrance because
their passports mentioned their birthplace in Macedonian, or because they were in the
«red list» of undesirables.
· 24-27 August (Thrace, Greece) GHM Thrace Office
coordinators’ meetings with representatives of Turkish minority.
· 1-18 October: (Thrace, Greece): Monitoring the
Local Elections. Meetings with the candidates for provincial governor, mayor and local
government boards. Monitoring also the local Turkish and Greek press covering the
elections.

Media Monitoring
· 13/3/1998 Greek Helsinki Monitor reports on the
various dimensions of the Kosovo crisis given by the Greek press.
· Monitoring of five daily Greek newspapers about
the image of minorities in Greece, as well as the peoples of Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia,
Romania, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. GHM’s media monitoring involves the participation from
Greece in the Cross - Border Information Exchange on Balkan Ethnic and National Prejudices
Project. Each month through this project, which ended in September 1998, GHM staff members
produced a report on the stereotypes and the hate speech present in the Greek media.

Since December 1997, GHM and MRG-G have developed a
web site which includes all their 1997 and 1998 reports, news releases, articles etc. It
has also hosted statements and reports from other Helsinki Committees or NGOs on Albania,
Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia, and FR Yugoslavia. In its first eight months it
has registered over 4,000 visits.
Electronic Mailing List
GHM and MRG-G also maintain a 1,000+ address
electronic mailing list to which they send all their releases, reports, articles, etc. as
well as similar publications with related interest. Most of these postings are re-posted
in other lists with additional 1,000 subscribers on average.
