MUSLIM ROMA IN ZRENJANIN PROTEST BELGRADE MUFTI'S DECISION

 13 DECEMBER 2000

Some 500 Muslim Roma in Zrenjanin, Vojvodina, have requested the Yugoslav Minister for Ethnic Minorities Rasim Ljajic and the Humanitarian Law Center to help reinstate Kasim Zlatic, their imam for the past 15 years whom they admire and respect for his efforts on behalf of poor believers. The imam was recently dismissed by the Mufti of Belgrade, Hamdija Jusufspahic.

Owing to the dismissal of Zlatic, the Muslim Roma in Zrenjanin are without a prayer leader in the holy month of Ramadan and are unable to perform their daily devotions. The Humanitarian Law Center recommends that Mufti Jusufspahic take into account the Muslim Roma?s respect for
their imam and settle the problem accordingly.
